The Collector's Ladies
Welcome to the collector's page! We all share a common
attraction--those lovely lady
head vases from the past. What is it about these pieces of fired
pottery and ceramic that
pull at your heart and purse strings? One common thread I hear over
and over again
amongst collectors is the feeling of nostalgia these ladies inspire in
them. Memories of
Grandma's house and simpler times.
This page is designed for a wee bit of showin' off and also for
collectors to get to know
each other a little better. If you would like to participate, please
send 2 or 3 clear photos
of your collection via email to kris.chinalski@alaska.net
and I
will respond with a
few questions about your collection--no fees involved--just fun!

How long have you been collecting? About 15 years
Which was your first head vase? A Rubens 485 from my sister
How many head vases do you have all together? It changes, but I like to have approx. 200 at all times
Which is your favorite head and why? My favorite isn't a head vase, but a lady bust. She is large, measuring approx 14" tall and I think she is from the 40's. I found her buried in the bottom of a very dark and dirty display case in an old antique store on Valentine's Day. I just couldn't leave her there! She has a lace bodice, ringlets, jewelry and beautiful eyes. You can see her in the bottom left corner of my first display case. I also cherish the vases that are given to me as gifts.
What is the farthest you've traveled to purchase a headvase? 2546.2 miles--I went to the Head Vase Convention in Florida one year!
Is there any rhyme or reason to which heads you purchase? I like the really detailed vases--arms, fingers, jewelry, hats, lace etc. I especially like the vases that have faces that look like real people.
Are there any other collectors in your family (past or present)? Yes.
If yes, what do they collect? My husband collects old tools, my older daughter is a fellow head vase collector and she also has quite a few Josef Originals. My grandmother was a collector par excellence! She took collecting to a new level, as in she never got rid of ANYTHING. I do have one headvase from her, a small glamour-type girl in yellow with a broken leaf that I will never get rid of.

How long have you been collecting? About 5 years
Which was your first head vase? The green one with the pink
bouquet , she's the colonial looking lady sitting down.
How many head vases do you have all together? 7 in good condition and 1
broken one I use for a pencil holder on my desk. I am hoping to
acquire more. I hit the antique stores, flea markets and junk stores
when I can. Pickings are slim though. A find is rare. With Ebay and
internet finds, I may end up broke!!
Which is your favorite head and why? The one in the dark aqua green
dress with white flowers.
Shes holding two baskets. She
reminds me of someone picking flowers in a mild breeze on a soft
summer day.
What is the farthest you've traveled to purchase a headvase?
About 3 hours to an antique
store on the backside of nowhere near the beach. I had seen her there
about six months before and didn't know if she would still be there.
Believe it or not she was and she had previously survived the floods
of hurricane Floyd (the store had been underwater to the roof) She was
my first planter purchase and the second planter I had ever seen. The
first, I believe it is a Josef, but I am not sure, was 25 years
before. My mother had bought it in a yard sale in
Missouri for 25 cent. We thought
it was a pencil holder and used it for one. I did not learn until
about 4-5 years ago what they were.
Is there any rhyme or reason to which heads you purchase?(sets, color,
eyes open/closed, etc) No. I buy what I like although I
am paritial to the southern belle with skirt blowing in the wind type
and the Leftons..
Are there any other collectors in your family (past or present)?
Of these,
not really. Although, my mother is beginnning to indulge in them a
little.
